Abstract

When the first human ancestors appeared on Earth, "civil engineering" existed, as it is the knowledge and technology developed to meet the needs of "food, clothing, shelter, and transportation" to ensure safety and comfort.

Taiwan has had indigenous people living on the island for thousands of years, and it wasn't until the Dutch ruling period that it entered the stage of world civilization. Now, the people on Taiwan has abundant facilities related to food, clothing, shelter, and transportation, which are accumulated through the contributions of Taiwan's civil engineers over time. Therefore, it is worth deeply understanding how Taiwan's civil engineers have been trained from ancient times.

In Chapter 1, "Overview of Civil Engineering Education in Taiwan," discusses the evolution of civil engineering education from prehistoric times through the Dutch, Kingdom of Tungning, Ching, Japanese, and post-world war II periods. Each transition not only involved changes in ethnicity and language but also in systems and institutions, including education systems, which were often completely rebuilt. The different systems shaped the ways of education, leaving a variety of influences on Taiwan's engineering education. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the evolution of civil engineering education in Taiwan.

In Chapter 2, "The Genes of Civil Engineering Education in Taiwan," explains the Japanese educations and the Chinese engineering system before World War II to formed the foundation of Taiwan’s civil engineering education.

In Chapter 3, "The Development and Evolution of Civil Engineering Education in Taiwan," provides a chronological account of the evolution of civil engineering education, focusing on the development of universities and colleges established during the Japanese era, such as National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, National Taipei University of Technology, and National Chung Hsing University.

In Chapter 4, "Overview of Newly Established Civil Engineering Departments after the 1950s," lists the history of civil engineering departments in schools founded or revived after World War II, showing the full scope of Taiwan’s civil engineering education.

Chapter 5 is the conclusions.
