　　本書是，以系友兼教授對本系歷史的熱誠，並有鑑於目前功利掛帥的高教系統中，校園文化資產越來越迅速流失之虞。這些資料的收集非常不容易，是收集整理近十七年的完整著作。本書涵蓋日治時期以及戰後之省立工學院、省立成功大學三階段，第一階段有師資專業、課程安排、實驗設備以及學生求學點滴。後面兩階段除了前述師資等內容之外，並敘述成立全國最早的機械碩士班研究所、夜間部的存廢、本系教師貢獻軍事科學教育、協助中國國家標準(CNS)之重新修訂及由本系衍生出的系所的初期歷史(如工程科學系、造船系、航空系)等。

Abstract

     As an alumni and a professor I am enthusiastic about the history of ME and concern about the Campus Cultural Assets which were not taken seriously and lost quickly. It is not easy to collect these references and takes about seventeen years to accomplish the complete volume. The book covers three periods, the Japanese-ruled period and the periods after the Second World War, including the Provincial College of Engineering, Provincial Cheng Kung University. The faculty profession, curriculum arrangement, laboratory equipment and the student studying activities were described. Later two periods, the earliest Master Degree of Mechanical Engineering Program of Taiwan. Night School Division establishment and demolishment, the contribution of the faculty members to the military science education, helping the revision of Chinese National Standard(CNS) and the early histories of the new departments from this department, including the Department of Engineering Science, the Department of Naval Architecture and the Department of Aeronautical Engineering.
