Abstract

     Mechanics of sediment transport is a lecture book discussing of the fundamental principle of sediment erosion, transportation and deposition in fluid. This book focuses on sediment transport in channel flows, and tries to introduce the sediment basic properties, falling velocity, fluid properties, drag force, incipient motion of sediment, sand wave, bed load, suspended load, total sediment load and associated equations in a way of easy understanding and step by step. The sediment knowledge introduced in this book has potential applications on land surface erosion, sediment transport in channels/rivers, river bed evolution, stable channel design, sediment control, coastal sediment transport, river mouth evolution, coastal line evolution, harbor sedimentation, reservoir sedimentation, removal of sediment from reservoir, and so on. This book is written in the form of easy understanding and step by step so as to help readers to build clear physical idea of sediment transportation, and enhance readers’ ability in analyzing sediment movement problems. Each chapter has examples with detailed solutions and practice problems. This book is suitable for college students having engineering background as a text book, and also suitable for practical hydraulic engineers as a reference book.
